China Research Day 2012 - Global Engagement for Global Impact

On Friday 1 June, UCL will host Professor Chunli Bai, the
recently appointed President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
Professor Bai is well known both as a chemist and as a leading nano-scientist.
His most recent research focus is scanning tunnelling microscopy and molecular
nanotechnology.
CAS is China’s national academy for research and
development, supporting the natural sciences, technological sciences and
high-tech innovation, not only through its own institutes and spin-out
companies in China, but also through collaborations with international research
partners like UCL.

Professor Bai will be accompanied on his visit to UCL by a number of directors from key CAS institutes to discuss future cooperation between CAS and UCL. UCL will also welcome eight Chinese research partners who are independently collaborating with UCL colleagues across the university.
As part of China Research Day, there will be an open forum of presentations from the CAS team with discussion about the work of CAS. This will take place from 9am-12.30pm and all members of UCL are welcome to attend. During the afternoon, each of the guests will be hosted by individual UCL departments to meet staff and students and hear more about research at UCL.
At 4pm Professor Bai will be awarded a UCL Doctor of Science
degree (honoris casua), following which he will present an address: Progress
and Prospective: Science, Technology and Innovation in China. This will be followed
by an open discussion and a reception. The CAS team and UCL’s visiting Chinese
research partners will attend this event, and members of the UCL community are
invited to attend.
This event is generously supported by the UCL ESPRC-funded project Global Engagement for Global Impact: Strategic Interaction with China, India, Germany and USA.
