Combating Modern Slavery - Kevin Hyland, OBE

Globalization allows for the more efficient production and delivery of goods and services, but it also has produced horrific working conditions for thousands of people across the globe. Free movement of labour across borders brings greater opportunity, but gaps in law enforcement and labour market regulation allow for the exploitation of workers, who may find themselves in unsafe working and living conditions, with few rights or legal recourse and subject to severe physical or emotional trauma.

In response to the scourge of modern slavery, the UK Government passed into law the Modern Slavery Act in 2015. In addition to fighting conditions that lead to slavery within the UK, British businesses also must draft plans of how they plan to keep slavery and labour and human rights abuse out of their global supply chains.

Kevin Hyland, OBE, is the UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner and he is tasked with encouraging best practice in the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of slavery and human trafficking offences. To that end, his office is responsible for conducting research, providing information, making reports and recommendations and consulting widely with public authorities and voluntary organizations. Prior to becoming the IASC, Mr. Hyland had been a police officer for 30 years and was most recently the head of the London Metropolitan Police's Human Trafficking Unit.
