The teaching and research staff at the Department of German at UCL are specialists in a wide range of fields and disciplines. The department's strengths include medieval, early-modern and modern literature, cultural studies, literary theory, Austrian studies, the practice and theory of translation and language acquisition, modern German history and politics, cultural, social and political theory, and film studies. All members of staff are prominent in their areas of expertise, attracting large numbers of postgraduates, organising a variety of conferences and seminars, and publishing a diverse array of articles, monographs and textbooks. The department includes a Fellow of the British Academy, the principal British historian of the German Democratic Republic, and acknowledged experts on women's writing, especially drama, Austrian literature, and feminist literary theory. Several scholarly journals, including Austrian Studies and the Publications of the English Goethe Society, are or have recently been co-edited from within the department.
