UCL’s sabbatical leave policy has been revamped to provide greater clarity on policy, process and approvals.
Sabbatical leave applies to all academic staff, in the grades of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor. It is a form of paid leave that is free from all teaching and administrative duties, allowing a member of staff to undertake research or other appropriate study related to their academic or professional field.
Sabbatical leave is provided to assist academic staff to maintain the high calibre of research, scholarship, teaching and innovation for which UCL is renowned.
To mark its commitment to gender equality in academic careers, UCL provides the opportunity for one term of sabbatical leave, without teaching commitments, to be taken by research active academic staff returning from maternity leave, additional paternity/partners leave (of more than 3 months duration), adoption leave or long term sickness absence. This leave will enable staff to more quickly re-establish their research activity. Academics interested in this term should meet with their head of department and complete the Sabbatical Term Expression of Interest form within four weeks of their return from leave.
Sabbatical leave may be granted at the discretion of the relevant Head of Department, Dean, Vice-Provost or Provost for a period of one term after three years’ qualifying service with UCL.
