Dr Jann Matlock

Dr Jann Matlock is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of French at UCL. She has previously been an associate professor at Harvard University and a visiting professor at the Universite de Paris 7, Jussieu, as well as a Guggenheim Fellow, a Getty Postdoctoral Fellow, a Fellow at the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University, and a recipient of grants from the NEH and the AHRC.

She is the author of Scenes of Seduction: Prostitution, Hysteria, and Reading Difference in Nineteenth-Century France (Columbia UP, 1994) and the coeditor, with Marjorie Garber and Rebecca Walkowitz, of Media Spectacles (Routledge, 1993). She has recently completed a book entitled Before the Voyeur: Spectacles of the Body, Aesthetics, and Vision in Nineteenth-Century France, and is now working on a project she calls Ghost Objects.

She writes on visual representation and cultural history between 1789 and the present. She was recently the recipient with Lee Grieveson of a UCL Research Challenges Grant to develop The Film Studies Space: A Centre for the Cultural History of the Moving Image, and will lead its project on "Cinematic Memory, Consumer Culture, and Everyday Life" that will run 2009-2011. She is a member of the Autopsies Research Group that will host events in conjunction with that project.
