Value: 30 credits
Tutor: Professor Stephen Hart
Assessment: five one-minute exercises, one 2,000-words essay and an eight-minute documentary
This ab initio ten-lesson course provides theoretical as well as practical advice on how to

It begins with five
individual film exercises based on the five building blocks of a documentary,
including (i) the self-portrait, (ii) the protagonist, (iii) tension within the
frame, (iv) mood, and (v) stages of a process.
Students then form groups and
create their documentary in five stages, based on (i) research, (ii) the
treatment, (iii) the storyboard, (iv) the shoot, and (v)
editing and post-production.
