Cinema and the British City

Since the end of the nineteenth century, when cinema’s pioneers captured life on London’s streets, British cities have featured prominently in fiction and non-fiction films produced in the UK. This module examines the multiple incarnations of the British city on screen, from the 1890s actualities of the Lumières and R. W. Paul to the 1990s postmodern travelogues of Patrick Keiller. Focusing on a different urban thematic each week, from the industrial north to the suburban south, this module examines how fiction and non-fiction cinema has become a medium through which we understand and engage with our urban environment. Although the emphasis in class will often be on London, students will be encouraged to think critically about how cinema engages with the architectural, social, economic and political forces at work in cities throughout the UK.
Each week students will view as a group one feature film (often in conjunction with a short non-fiction film), while watching another on their own and preparing a set of readings for discussion. Week four will be devoted to research methodologies, after which each student will be expected to focus on one of the topics addressed in the module, and using one archival resource, report back to the class on what they have been able to find out. This course seeks to foster an interdisciplinary approach to film studies and requires students to engage with a variety of texts from the fields of film studies and urban studies that will shed light on how the Britain’s urban cultures have become imbricated within its cinema.
