Melvyn Stokes

Melvyn Stokes is Reader in Film History at UCL. He has been a Visiting Fellow at Princeton, a Fulbright Exchange Professor at Mount Holyoke College and a Visiting Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Melvyn is the author of D. W. Griffith’s ‘The Birth of a Nation’ (OUP, 2007), Gilda (BFI, 2010) and American History through Hollywood Film (Bloomsbury 2013). He currently has a contract with OUP for a book on Chaplin’s reception in France. He has co-edited five books on cinema audiences and directs the AHRC-funded research project on ‘Cultural Memory and British Cinema-going of the 1960s.’ He currently serves as president of SERCIA, the European association of film scholars.
