Landing of convicts at Botany Bay

On 28 March 1791, James Martin, with seven male convicts, one female convict and two infants, stole the governor’s six-oared cutter to make their escape from transportation to Australia. They encountered ferocious storms and Aboriginal peoples before arriving at West Timor on 5 June. There they posed as the survivors of a shipwreck.

Among the vast collections of Jeremy Bentham is the only extant first-hand account: the Memorandoms of James Martin. Hear about their flight from captivity and Bentham’s interest in convict transportation.

The original manuscript will be on display and is available online
