FATHUM is a faceted classification designed to accommodate the humanities and was developed for the FATKS project (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/fatks)

During this one year project, the following parts of the humanities vocabulary were developed:

  • broad knowledge classification (300 concepts)
  • generally applicable concepts (3000 concepts)
  • religion (2200 concepts)
  • the arts (300 terms)

A contextual subject alphabetical index (chain index) contains 9300 entries.

The classification is designed so that concepts can be freely combined in the process of indexing. Information on classification system design and rules can be found at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/fatks/classification_system.htm.

The classification is stored in a relational database. Information on the database is available at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/fatks/fathum.htm.

A web interface to the classification content search and browse facilities are available below.
