European Studies

Monument and European flag

Our MA programmes and research opportunities focus on the emergence of modern Europe, the political implications of integration, and its transition from competing nation states and forms of governance to an expanding political and economic union. As part of the MA, students take complementary optional courses, which may be national, regional, or European in scope. There are two pathways: Modern European Studies and European Society. The Modern European Studies examines the history, politics and institutions of the European Union while the European Society pathway looks at the different types of historical and social-scientific inquiry which inform our understanding of social structures.
