Newsletter - Issue 2

November 2010

That this second newsletter comes hot on the heels of the first - barely 3 weeks have passed since we first announced our existence - is an indication of the pace with which the Institute has begun its inaugural year.

In this issue, we want to highlight some of the key upcoming events. In particular, there is the lecture by Tariq Modood that inaugurates this year's theme of Europe and Islam. Then we have a discussion with the Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo about the relationship between his philosophy and his work as an MEP. This event forms part of the celebrations organised to mark the move of the UK Commission and European Parliament representations to their new home in Europe House, and is the first of what we hope will be an ongoing series of future collaborations with them.

We also want to encourage UCL staff and advanced research students to apply under our two funding schemes, the deadline for which we have just extended. We are especially keen to encourage projects or events of a cultural or historical character and that address the wider Europe to complement our current programme's emphasis on the European Union. Finally, a warm welcome to our new staff member, Susie Griffin, who joined us at the beginning of the month as a key part of the Institute administration.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our events. You can register by clicking on the links below.
