1st Annual Sakharov Debate on the ECtHR
8 December 2011, 4.30-6pm, Europe House
From 2011, we will jointly host an annual public debate on human rights issues in Europe with the European Parliament Office in the UK, held to coincide with the awarding of the Sakharov Prize. The inaugural debate will focus on the relationship between Britain and the European Court of Human Rights. In so doing, it will aim to address both the inaccuracies and urban myths, as well as the legitimate worries circulating in the public's perception about the place of human rights legislation in today's society.. Speakers include Shami Chakrabarti (Liberty), Charles Tannock MEP, Robert Buckland MP, as well as Richard Bellamy and Colm O'Cinneide from UCL. Chaired by Joshua Rozenberg (BBC4 Law in Action).

New Publication

EU Citizenship and the Market
Edited Richard Bellamy and Uta Staiger
The bulk of rights that come with EU citizenship are still related to the internal market. Are Union citizens thus defined as consumers, workers or producers, rather than as politically empowered citizens? Is the increasing expansion of this “market citizenship” through ECJ rulings even undermining social solidarity? Or could the rights, which allow European citizens to move to and settle in another Member States, lead them to identify more closely with their fellow Europeans? With contributions by Rainer Bauböck, Richard Bellamy, Christian Joppke, Dora Kostakopoulou, Dimitry Kochenov, madeleine kennedy-macfoy, Jonathan Scheele, Uta Staiger.
