1st Annual Sakharov Debate: The European Court of Human Rights
8 December 2011
From 2011, the UCL European Institute and the European Parliament Office in the UK will jointly host an annual public debate to explore current developments on Human Rights in Europe. The inaugural debate will focus on the relationship between Britain and the European Court of Human Rights. It will tackle the inaccuracies and urban myths, as well as legitimate worries, circulating in the general public’s perception of the role of human rights legislation in today’s society.

Negotiating Religion I: European Legacies
23 November 2011, 3-7pm, Chadwick G08, UCL
This academic year, we will run a workshop series on the complex processes, through which religious communities create or defend their place in a given commonwealth. This first event addresses the history of religious conflict and accommodation, and gauges the impact of scepticism and secularization in Europe. After a keynote on the relationship of public reasoning and religious commitment, four papers reflect on historical examples of religious communities and attitudes negotiating their place in state and society.

New Working Paper

The Domestic Deficits of Representative Democracy in EU Affairs
Richard Bellamy (UCL) and Sandra Kröger (Exeter)
This paper explores the role of national parliaments in EU policy-making after the Lisbon Treaty, which gave them a potentially significant legal status in the democratic governance of the EU. The paper critically assesses whether despite those innovations, domestic representative institutions are capable of living up to the normative role assigned to them and argues that to a degree that capacity has been eroded by the very process of European integration they are now supposed to control.

In cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute in London, we screen three films by renowned experimental filmmakers Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, to complement a programme dedicated to their work at the Tate Modern. The filmmakers will be present and discuss their work with Robert Lumley, Professor of Italian Cultural History at UCL, and Robert Gordon (Cambridge).

EMU Governance: Tackling the Crisis

They will be discussing which potential changes to EMU governance could tackle the current debt crisis and prevent future ones.
