10 things you need to know about what will happen if Scotland votes yes

As the Scottish independence referendum draws closer the outcome is hard to predict. Both Westminster politicians and the wider public are asking what – in practical terms – would happen if the Scots were to vote Yes. Robert Hazell offers a 10-point overview of what the road to independence might look like.

The truth is, Scandinavia is neither heaven nor hell

The Nordic countries have received exceptionally good press in the UK - at least until earlier this year, when British travel writer and resident of Denmark, Michael Booth, claimed to dispel the of Scandinavia as the perfect place to live. Many are now confused. Is everything we believed about the social ideals of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland a lie? Well, not entirely but we’re not all drunk serial killers either.

A Question of Trust

The age-old question of what holds our societies together re-emerges periodically, particularly in times of crisis. In a world ever more globalised and virtual, the answer is often cast in terms of "trust", with its pivotal role as regularly called upon as its health called into question. How has trust risen to this centrality, and is it all as straightforward as it seems?

Small Grants Scheme

For UCL staff only

Junior Researchers Forum

For UCL students only.

CfP (faculty): Small Grants Scheme, 2012-13

The UCL European Institute invites applications from UCL staff to its Small Grants Scheme, which funds projects that lead to or support collaborative research-based projects on Europe or the European Union. Proposed projects may be formulated in response to current affairs or long-standing research questions. Proposals based on the collaboration between staff based in different UCL departments are particularly encouraged.

We particularly invite proposals that aim to either (or both):

  1. achieve research impact (through scholarly output, public engagement, influence on policy and practice, knowledge transfer or similar)
  2. prepare the ground for extended research projects (including grant applications).

Typical projects eligible for funding include:

  • hosting a research conference, a seminar, workshop, or symposium, where possible with a public element
  • public engagement activities and collaborations with external non-academic institutions
  • costs associated with a specific project, e.g. research assistant time (UCL HEFCE staff costs/salaries are not eligible)
  • costs associated with a pilot study or the preparation of an application for the funding of a major research project

Call for Proposals (research students): Junior Researchers Forum 2012-13

The UCL European Institute invites applications to its yearly funding scheme for groups of MA, PhD and/or post-doctoral students, who wish to explore common research interests related to Europe or the European Union, aim to develop new research output, or seek to raise the profile and impact of their research.

Proposed projects may be formulated in response to current affairs or long-standing research questions. Proposals, which count with lead applicants from at least two different departments at UCL, will be given priority.

Typical projects eligible for funding include:

  • organising a research conference, a seminar series, workshop(s), or a public panel discussion
  • convening a reading or discussion group
  • costs associated with working groups leading to written research output (publication, working paper, report)
  • costs associated with research activity (e.g. travel, interviews) leading to an event, feeding into a reading/discussion group or resulting in a co-authored publication
  • public engagement activities and collaborations with external non-academic institutions
