10 December 2014
The European Film Salon will be screening Aftermath (2012): A contemporary drama that was inspired by the Jedwabne progrom in the Jewish community of Jedwabne and the book "Neighbors" by Jan T. Gross.
When: 10 December 2014 7pm-8:30pm |
Where: Garwood Lecture Theatre South Wing Main Campus |
Aftermath tells the story of two brothers intent on finding out what happened in their village during the war and how their own family became entangled in the murder of their Jewish neighbours. In Poland, the film was very controversial and reignited the controversy about the role Poles played in the Holocaust.
Part of the Reverberations of the Second World War in Germany and Europe research group, The European Film Salon is a film and discussion series which considers the representation of perpetrators in documentary and feature films. Through an analysis of film, the group seek to discuss questions such as: What is meant by the term 'perpetrator'? What is the legacy of perpetrators over the generations? How do perpetrators narrate their own actions? What is the place of individual agency and social mobilization in defining a perpetrator? And, what are the implications of our interest in and fascination with perpetrators?
All screenings will be introduced by an academic, critic or director and will be followed by a discussion of the aforementioned questions.
- The screening of Aftermath (2012) will be introduced by Professor Julian Petley (Brunel), who has written about the films reception in Poland.
