Join the UCLU European Society for its fourth
academic event of the year as we welcome independent writer and
political entrepreneur Philippe Legrain for a talk entitled "A European
Spring for a More Decent, Dynamic and Democratic Europe".
Philippe Legrain is the author of "European Spring: Why Our Economies
and Politics are in a Mess - and How to Put Them Right (2014)", a book
that sets out how to solve the current crisis decisively and fairly,
suggests ways to create lasting shared prosperity by making our
economies more adaptable, dynamic and decent, and sketches how to make
both national and EU politics more open and democratic.
He is also the founder of European Spring, a grassroots movement for economic and political renewal intending "to build a pan-European community who can inject fresh ideas into our stale politics, mobilise people from across Europe, and campaign for a more dynamic, decent and democratic Europe."
From 2011 to 2014, he was adviser to former European Commission president José Manuel Barroso. Before that, Legrain was a visiting fellow at the European Institute of the London School of Economics, a senior fellow at the Lisbon Council for Economic Competitiveness and Social Renewal and chief economist and director of policy for the pro-European pressure group Britain in Europe. A commentator for BBC TV and radio, he has written for various newspapers and magazines, including the FT,The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, the Wall Street Journal Europe, the New Statesman, The Economist and Prospect Magazine.
