Standard Specifications for locks and Access Control Systems
The UCL Security department is responsible for the policies and procedures that define our approach and response to security concerns. We're responsible for the provision of building attendants, security personnel and the on-going management, support and maintenance of security measures – including physical locks on doors, electronic access control, intercom systems, CCTV systems and alarm monitoring. Please visit our Standard Specifications page for full details.
Identity Cards
You will be issued with a UCL ID smart card at the beginning of your course or contract. This is an important part of UCL’s security provision and we’d ask that you keep this safe, and carry it with you at all times whilst on UCL premises, to help us provide you with a safe and secure environment in which to work and study. You may from time to time be asked by Security staff to show your ID card - we’d ask that you assist us with this, and would encourage you to wear your ID card while on campus. We can provide you with belt hook or neck lanyard card holders which will help keep your card safe while keeping it handy for using on card readers – These are available from the Security card issue office in the Andrew Huxley Building.
For undergraduate students:
This applies only to students who are currently enrolled at UCL. Students should bring a form of personal ID (e.g. bank card, driving licence) to the Security Office in the Andrew Huxley Building. No other form of authority is required. The first issue of your ID card is free, however, if a card is lost or stolen during its period of validity, the next two issues will be free, but a £15 administration fee will be charged on any subsequent occasion where a replacement is requested for reasons other than card expiry, changes to the information on the card, or card failure. In such circumstances a voucher must be bought from the UCL Shop and then taken to the card issue office, where a new card will be issued. Please click here http://www.ucl.ac.uk/estates/ucl-shop/ for details of the UCL Shop opening hours; the Security Office opens Monday to Friday, 9.00am and 4.45pm.
To add any specific building access rights, authorized signatories should email the request to securitysystems@ucl.ac.uk.
The name and departmental information displayed on the student card is held by the Registry and not by Security. The first name is recorded by the Registry as "Known as". If this information needs to be changed, the student should contact the Registry directly first.

Updating cards & replacement for faulty cards
If any of the information on your record has changed (name, department or expiry date etc.), or your card is faulty, a replacement card will be issued free and not counted as one of your allocation of free replacements for lost or stolen cards. In this instance please ensure that you bring in your old card, or this issue will be counted against your allocation.
Please note that the UCL ID card remains the property of UCL and must be returned to UCL Security at the end of your contract or course. The card is not transferable and must be used by the named cardholder only.
