Application Procedure for 2013 entry

You may apply for this programme on the UCAS application form by quoting the code for UCL: U80 and the programme code for European Social and Political Studies: R990.

Please indicate clearly (under 'further details' in the 'choices' section of the UCAS form) which modern European language you wish to study as your major language, or both if you are taking two major languages. There is no need to indicate your choice of minor language at this stage.

Information on the languages available on the programme can be found here.

Information on the programme structure according to one major language, two major languages, or one major and one minor language can be found here.

Please note that there is particularly strong competition for places on ESPS with Russian as a major language and we therefore advise you to express a clear interest in taking Russian in your personal statement if selecting this language.

You may not apply for the language in which you have completed most of your schooling, or for English.

You may indicate the humanities or social science subject in which you propose to specialise. Click here for the list of humanities/social science specialisms.

Please ensure that your application includes predicted grades supplied by your teachers. If you are not taking A-levels, this information should consist of both an overall grade and a breakdown of grades for the individual subjects you are taking. Past performance (in the form of achieved grades in preceding years) should also be stated.

The UCAS application will normally be supplied by your school or college, or may be obtained from the Universities and Colleges Admission Service.

We accept approximately 40 undergraduates each year, and invite to an assessment day all candidates who seem suited for the degree. Out of an average of 450 applicants, 200 are usually selected for assessment. This selection is based on the information on the UCAS form.

Click here for the average points score for each of the most common ESPS entry qualifications obtained by students who were admitted to the programme recently.

It is not normally possible to see the Admissions Tutor before applying, but all enquiries will receive a reply.

For further information please consult the UCL undergraduate prospectus online.

About the Assessment Day

If you live in Europe and you meet (or are expected to meet) our entry criteria, you will be invited to an ESPS assessment day. This will involve an introduction to the degree by the Admissions Tutor, followed by the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) test. You will also take part in one of several discussion groups chaired by ESPS members of staff. The assessment day will provide an opportunity for you to find out more about the structure of the degree programme and to meet current students.

If you are resident in a country outside Europe you will be interviewed by telephone and asked to submit an essay on a set topic written under exam conditions.

Applicants taking a gap year will be expected to attend one of the assessment days.

Assessment Days

Assessment days in 2012-13 will be from 13:00 - 17:30 on:

    Wednesday 5 December 2012
    Wednesday 16 January 2013
    Wednesday 6 February 2013
    Wednesday 27 February 2013
    Wednesday 20 March 2013.

If your application is selected for assessment you will receive an email inviting you to one of our assessment days. You will be asked to arrive at 12:50 and wait outside Room 106, Roberts Building (grid reference C5 on this map).

You may wish to arrive earlier so that you can take a Self-guided Tour of UCL during the morning. (Tours of the College led by ESPS students will be offered in the afternoon, after the TSA test.) Further details of the Self-Guided Tour are available from the Study Information Centre.
