Induction information

UCL term starts on Monday 24 September 2012. Below you will find information for Registration Week and before: meetings and module registration procedures in ESPS and in the departments of your chosen subjects.

Before term starts

Before you arrive at UCL, you are required to:

  • Study carefully the Module Selection Guidelines for Affiliate Students(.pdf) as well as the modules offered in other departments.
  • Enter your module selections on the Affiliate Module Selection Form. Email this to ESPS no later than Friday 7th September 2012. This module application deadline also applies to Affiliate students starting in Term 2.
  • Send a passport-sized photograph of yourself with your name written clearly on the reverse, or deliver the photo in person to Jenny in the ESPS office by Monday 17th September. Click here for the full postal address of ESPS.
  • Refer to the Practical Information page. You will also need to refer to the ESPS Administration for Students Moodle page as soon as you have your UCL userid and password. Pre-arrival at UCL, new students will be asked ot obtain their UCL userid and password via the Online User Registration Service www.ucl.ac.uk/our/.
  • International (non-UK) students should attend the International Students' Orientation Programme, 20 - 21 September. During this Programme, you will be introduced to UCL and learn how to start your exchange here. You will visit ESPS for the first time on Thursday 20 September at 15:00. Please come to Room G02, Ground Floor, 33-35 Torrington Place.

During Registration Week

During Registration Week you are required to:

  • Attend the preliminary meeting of the first year core module ESPS1001 (if you have selected this module) on Wednesday 26 September at 14:00 in Roberts Building 508.
  • Attend registration sessions in the departments of your chosen modules. You will visit the departments of your chosen subjects to familiarise yourself with their locations and to find out where the teaching will take place, and if there is a reading list or other set of instructions to be noted before teaching begins. Remember to check your obligations with the departments of your chosen subjects.
  • Attend a module registration session where you will be shown how to register your modules on Portico. These drop-in sessions will take place daily during Registration Week in the Jeremy Bentham Room, North Cloisters. Instructions for registering your modules on Portico can be found here. If you experience any problems in connection with module registration, please email Jenny with the relevant module codes, not the module titles.
  • Check that your timetable is clash-free, using the UCL Common Timetable. The UCL Common Timetable displays your personal timetable week by week, and lets you find out what is being taught, when, where and by whom across UCL.

You are also strongly encouraged to attend the following non-academic meetings:

  • The joint ESPS and Philosophy Department party on Wednesday 26 September at 16:30 on the Portico Steps, Front Quad. This is where new students and those in different year groups first get to know one another.
  • In addition to your year group's individual Welcome Meeting on 20 September, a General ESPS Welcome Meeting for all year groups will be held on Wednesday 26 September at 14:30, in Roberts Building 508. This will involve talks from UCL's Voluntary Service Unit and UCL Careers Service as well as talks from students in other year groups and from ESPS graduates.

The ESPS Affiliate Tutor, Dean Machin, will be available on Monday 24 September between 12:00 and 13:00 if you have any concerns or questions.
