Introduction

European Social and Political Studies (ESPS) is a challenging and flexible four-year programme at a university known for academic innovation, open access and the quality of its teaching. Students gain not only from UCL’s world-class teaching system and the insights of its renowned humanities, language and social sciences scholars, but also from the expertise of their European counterparts.

The BA degrees of ESPS combine specialisation in one of nine humanities and social sciences, with a broad base in European history, law, politics and philosophy, and fluency in a European language to degree level. The programmes are designed as ‘PPE or SPS with a foreign language’, where students gain access to the literature of their chosen specialism in both English and their major language/s. The single degree includes a year spent in a continental European university. We have exchange places with partner universities in Berlin, Bordeaux, Brussels, Hamburg, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Seville and Rome. The dual degree is comprised of two years of study at one of the campuses of Sciences Po, followed by two years at UCL.

ESPS attracts applicants from many different countries; the degree produces graduates who go on to undertake research or professional training and take up employment in a range of fields such as journalism, government or business, in the UK and internationally.

Study in a global city

Located in Bloomsbury, at the heart of the city’s university district, ESPS benefits from the first-class facilities of London. Our location is only ten minutes’ walk away from the British Library, Senate House, the British Film Institute and the British Museum.

A dynamic, historic and intensely cosmopolitan city, London is one of the most exciting student destinations in the world. Cultural events, from foreign-language films to exhibitions, are continually available and, thanks to London’s appeal to overseas workers and students, there are native speakers with whom to sharpen your conversation skills whatever your choice of European language.

ESPS attracts highly qualified and intellectually ambitious students from the UK, the rest of Europe and throughout the world. With just under 300 students overall, we are able to offer teaching in small groups and to create specialisms in the social sciences and humanities to suit individual requirements.

Diverse teaching

UCL is as rewarding and as diverse as the city of which it is an integral part. Students can take pride in an institution which has offered open access to higher education since the early nineteenth century, admitting and encouraging those who would benefit from its degree programmes, regardless of creed, race, class or gender.
Nowhere has UCL’s innovative approach been more at the fore than in the field of European Studies. ESPS staff carry out research and offer courses in Philosophy, the History of Political Thought, Political Science, International Relations, Law, History and Political Economy. In addition, students benefit from the expertise and range of courses offered by some of the most highly rated departments in social sciences and humanities in the UK.

An early advocate of the pursuit of modern languages at degree level, UCL founded the first Chairs in the country in French, German, Italian and Spanish, and filled them with political refugees from their homelands. ESPS maintains this commitment to diversity and progress, giving students a critical grasp of the changes confronting Europe and the wider world, and producing graduates uniquely equipped to take up the challenges that those changes present.
