Arctic Ocean Freshwater Increase.

Katharine Giles and colleagues have discovered that the freshwater stored in the western Arctic Ocean has increased by 8000 km3 between the 1990s and 2010 by looking at changes in the sea surface height measured by the European Space Agency Satellites ERS-2 and Envisat.

The History of Research on Neoproterozoic Glaciations.

2 November 2011

Shields - publication

As chair of UNESCO-IUGS International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) project 512, Graham Shields-Zhou is the co-editor of a new book presenting the latest research on extreme climate change during the Neoproterozoic Era.

The "Memoir 36: The Geological Record of Neoproterozoic Glaciations” was published by the Geological Society.

In recent years, interest in Neoproterozoic glaciations has grown as their pivotal role in Earth system evolution has become increasingly clear. This Memoir therefore consists of a series of overview chapters followed by site-specific chapters. The overview chapters cover key topics including the history of research on Neoproterozoic glaciations, identification of glacial deposits, chemostratigraphic techniques and datasets, palaeomagnetism, biostratigraphy, geochronology and climate modelling. The site specific chapters for 60 successions worldwide include reviews of the history of research on these rocks and up-to-date syntheses of the structural framework, tectonic setting, palaeomagnetic and geochronological constraints, physical, biological, and chemical stratigraphy, and descriptions of the glaciogenic and associated strata, including economic deposits
