Shirley Cupit
Biographical Details:
Shirley Cupit is Senior Co-ordinator: Community Orientated
Medical Education. She has worked in the department since 1996,
and has a lead role in the development and delivery of community
orientated teaching in the medical undergraduate programme. Prior
to this she worked for many years in the delivery of health and
social care. Initially this was in the NHS as a hospital based
State Registered Nurse and from the mid 1980's in Voluntary Sector
homelessness and HIV/AIDS community services. Since 1985 she has
also worked in a freelance capacity as a trainer/consultant with
Voluntary Sector agencies, delivering training on a range of health
and social care issues. In 1994 she obtained an Applied Social
Sciences (Policy Studies) degree at the University of North London.
She is currently studying an MA in Adult Learning and Professional
Development at UCL.
Teaching in the MBBS
She is Chair of the Community Orientated Medicine component of the Professional
Development Spine. This involves the organisation and support of community
placements and community visitor sessions throughout Phase 1. She is also
a first year Professional Development Spine Tutor. In addition she delivers
community based Student Selected Modules (SSM) in the second and final years
on the topics of Homelessness and Health, Alcohol and Drugs Misuse, Working
with Vulnerable Individuals and Living with Long Term Conditions.
