WORKSHOPS ON HISTORY AND POETRY
November and December 2010
Ruth Padel held two workshops this term around the subject of “History and
Poetry”, in connection with environmental issues. Attendees were interested in ways of
reading: either historically, as
background to their study of History, or creatively as background both to
Literature and Creative Writing. Ruth looked at questions such as "How
do poets use outside knowledge, whether that is historical, scientific or
environmental, without being didactic or letting the message swamp the poetry?" A wide range of examples were discussed.
