Corporate massage business gets a timely health check

Corporate massage has become increasingly popular over the past decade. Charlotte Hunter, managing director of the On Site Massage Co., has approached HELO for an objective assessment of the business. The HELO team put together a team of four students who conducted business analysis and drew up a list of recommendations to take the company forward.

There is a wealth of evidence that corporations’ investing in the wellbeing of their people has tangible business benefits. Hence the growing interest in corporate massage. For Charlotte Hunter, managing director of the On Site Massage Co., that news is good - and bad. Since she started the business in 2001, the industry has become increasingly competitive, and Charlotte felt she needed some independent advice in taking the company into the next decade.

Charlotte approached the HELO team, who had been recommended to her by a business associate, and they put together a team of four, including Hina Amlani, a student in French and translation studies. Hina says: “I was interested in retail consultancy, and had already worked in merchandising for BhS, Monsoon and Radley & Co. I lacked experience in consulting, and this project was a great opportunity to acquire skills in a supportive environment while still studying – an opportunity not many students get.”

The students conducted a business analysis on the two sides of the On Site Massage Co.’s business: corporate and events, and home visits. They put together a list of recommendations including developing a presence on social media and offering a range of incentives for returning customers. They also suggested that priority should be given to the corporate side of the business, as it is more lucrative and less problematic than home visits.

Charlotte says: “It’s helped enormously to have a fresh view of the business. I run the business largely on my own, and sometimes that can get very insular. I’ve already put some of the team’s recommendations in place. We’re currently redesigning our website and feel confident that their suggestions will make a huge difference to our online presence.”

Now graduated, Hina has a job in retail consultancy at Deloitte. She impressed her interviewers – at all three stages of an intense recruitment process – with her experience at the On Site Massage Co. She says: “The HELO programme is unique. My bosses, who interview hundreds of potential candidates every year, have never heard of anything like it. I have no doubt that it helped me to be successful here.”
