Graduate Funding
AHRC funding
2012-2013
The English Department has an allocation of two
doctoral and three master's studentships for 2012-13. Unfortunately funding cuts mean that not all these awards, especially for Masters programmes, may be allocated. Interviews for AHRC studentships will be held in late March 2012; only candidates
who have already been offered a place on the programme will be
considered for an award. If candidates wish to be considered for
AHRC funding they are requested to indicate this on their application
form when applying for a place at UCL.
Nominated students will have to complete a JeS (Joint
Electronic Submission) online application to the AHRC, the period
for doing which opens at the end of May and closes at the end of
July 2011. However, UCL policy will be that any students who have
not completed their JeS application by 30 June 2012 will
forfeit their nomination, which would pass to the next on the reserve
list.
The English Department will give its nominated students
help and advice about how to complete the JeS form.
Please note that applicants can be nominated
for an AHRC studentship by one department or programme only;
the AHRC will automatically reject any student nominated by more
than one.
Once the JeS applications are in, AHRC will carry
out an eligibility check, but otherwise will accept the nominations
of the institutions. Standard award letters will then go out in
August, but students will effectively know that they will have
a grant to study at UCL if they are told in April that they have
been selected for nomination.
For further information about eligibility and the
nomination process, please consult the AHRC website.

UCL GRS/ORS scholarships
2012-13
UCL provides up to 15 UCL Graduate
Research Scholarships (GRS), available annually to prospective
and current UCL MPhil/PhD and
EngD students from any country. In addition it offers c. 40
UCL Overseas Research Scholarships annually, which are
available to overseas MPhil/PhD students and will cover the
difference
between the overseas and the current UK/EU tuition fees. UCL
will cover the UK/EU fee element for UCL-ORS recipients who do
not have any other fee funding.
Nominations from departments to the College are due by Friday 24 February 2012.
In order to meet this deadline, interested students should submit
their scholarship applications to the English department by Friday 10 February 2012.
Please note that there is only one combined application procedure
and application form for both of these schemes, and applicants
should submit only ONE application. Applicants will then be considered
for the awards for which they are eligible.
Detailed information for staff and students as well as the downloadable
application form and guidance for referees are available from the
relevant weblinks (GRS, ORS) in the UCL
Scholarships and Funding webpages. Please note that the same
application form is provided on each webpage.

Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities
Applications are invited for three 3-year research studentships in the humanities, funded by the Wolfson Foundation. The studentships will normally cover fees (at the UK/EU level) and include a maintenance stipend of £19,370 p.a. and an element for research and training costs.
Applications will be considered for students interested in undertaking doctoral research in the disciplines of history, literature and languages. One studentship will be available in each discipline. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record, usually a first class honours degree at undergraduate level and a Master’s degree from a recognised university in a cognate field of study to their proposed doctoral research.
Applicants must submit an application for a research degree to one of the participating departments in the Faculties of Arts and Humanities or Social and Historical Sciences. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday 1 February 2012. Applicants must also write to the postgraduate admissions tutor of the relevant department indicating that they wish to be considered for a Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarship.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in the second half of March.
