The Pragmatic Analysis of Corpora of Naturally-Occurring Talk

Abstract
In this paper I shall discuss the collection and pragmatic analysis of corpora of naturally-occurring data. The first is a large corpus of doctor-patient interaction. I show how it is possible to undertake a limited pragmatic analysis (specifically, disambiguation) and discuss the strengths and limitations of this approach.

The second (which is work-in-progress) is a corpus of broadcast political interviews, which I collected in order to explore aspects of pragmatic ambivalence. Again, I show the possibilities, strengths and limitations of computer-based analysis.
