The UCL Centre for Early
Modern Exchanges explores all aspects of intercultural exchange in the
period 1450-1800. Registration is now open for the centre's Launch Conference, 15-17 September 2011. NEW – follow our conference blog for regular news and updates.
Registration
The centre's three-day British Academy supported Launch Conference
will be a major international event promoting innovative research
collaborations. Themes will include: travel, exile and migration; trade
in material and cultural goods (including books and manuscripts); and
the transition of literary and artistic influences across national and
linguistic borders. Translation and language learning will be key
interests, as will ‘translatio’ in a broad sense as the transformative
appropriation of ideas and identities. Hence the conference will
investigate encounters with ‘others’, the dissemination of scientific
and medical knowledges, and the early modern world’s interaction with
its ancient and medieval pasts. This is a timely conference which will
showcase innovative scholarship and have significant impact on the
field of early modern studies.
Conference Exhibition
UCL Art Collections are running an exhibition to coincide with the Early Modern Exchanges launch conference. 'Word and Image: Early Modern Treasures at UCL' explores cultural exchange in the period 1450 to 1800, and will be held in the Strang Print Room. Featuring
highlights from UCL’s art and rare book collections, 'Word and Image'
delves into themes such as travel, translation and the traffic of
objects and ideas. It offers the chance to see an eclectic and unusual
combination of items, including a 17th-century volume on the history of
Lapland complete with pictures of skis, an illustrated early work of
Egyptology, and images of elaborately costumed Jesuits in China. It also
provides a rare opportunity to see Albrecht Dürer’s woodcuts from The
Apocalpypse (1498) next to its precusor The Nuremberg Chronicle (1493). For location details, click here.
