Dr Sharon Okeke

Sharon is a qualified primary school teacher (inner London) and learning support teacher working in Westminster Schools - supporting children identified with SEN, their families and school staff from EY to Key Stage 4.

She was part of the initial cohort of DECPsy trainees at the Tavistock and Portman Clinic in 2006. Following an initial placement at Lambeth, Sharon was employed as a trainee in Medway (Kent). After qualifying she was employed with Lambeth EPS (2009) where she has remained. Lambeth has been a 100% buy back service since at least 2004. Her experiences there include school work in a mixture of mainstream and specialist setting working from EY to KS4. She has supervised Trainee EPs from the IoE and been a Fieldwork Consultant.

Sharon is one of the EPs who have successfully introduced the ELSA (Emotional Literacy for Support Assistants) programme to Lambeth. October 2018 will see the third cohort of TAs start the ELSA programme. She is one of the EPs who offers the ELSAs CPD i.e. ongoing supervision in their roles.

She worked with colleagues from a number of disciplines in orders to support pupils, schools and parents, running parenting programmes such as Triple P.

At present Sharon is one of a team of EPs delivering the Early Years Inclusion Fund for Lambeth’s SEND Service Early Years Team to EY settings. The focus is to narrow the learning gap; support school readiness; be part of early identification of needs and promoting the social and emotional well-being of the child and families.

Sharon was governor (SEN) in a secondary school for over 12 years, starting her role while the school was being built and remaining in the role long enough to see the initial Year 7 pupils leave for higher education.

Sharon’s professional interests include parenting, early childhood development and social emotional wellbeing in pupils, families and the systems they are within.
