How to apply

MRes students

Entry Requirements

For admission to the research degree programme, applicants should have, or expect to obtain before entry, a Master's degree in Economics or a related subject and must demonstrate that they are qualified to proceed to research work.

Admission to the MRes programme depends not only on your qualifications, reflected by grades, reference letters, GRE scores and statement of research interests, but also on availability of faculty members to provide dissertation supervision. Although staff research is wide-ranging, it is impossible to guarantee that the interests of prospective candidates will coincide with the areas of research of staff members.

Although the graduate school website states that all prospective applicants are encouraged to send an informal research enquiry directly to the academic you are interested in working with, the department of economics does not require applicants to approach individual staff members at this stage. Please note that students will not normally be allowed to enter the programme at any time other than the beginning of the academic year.

Please note the MRes (Master’s of Research) is the first year of the PhD Economics programme and is a compulsory and fully-integrated part of the PhD. An MRes is different to an MSc or MA degree in that it’s a Research programme not a Taught programme. If you already have a Master’s degree you’ll still need to completely the MRes year of the PhD. The MRes Programme is a compulsory part of the programme and all applicants must apply directly to the MRes Programme before they can apply to study the MPhil/PhD Programme.

English language requirements

All students whose first language is not English must be able to provide recent evidence that their spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the programmes for which they have applied. English requirements are available on the prospective dtudents website, including a list of acceptable tests.

GRE Test

The GRE General Test is a required in your application, unless you hold a recent MSc in Economics from UCL, or who are currently enrolled in the UCL MSc Economics programme. You should submit your GRE scores along with the rest of your application.

Other details

Applicants who are currently enrolled on a programme of study must upload to their application a complete list of the courses they are taking this academic year.
