Course update

While CPD courses continue to run, the MSc programme is no longer running, and we are definitely not recruiting for 2024/25.

Dental Sedation and Pain Management Certificate

A part-time, one-year Postgraduate Certificate programme in standard sedation techniques to develop students' theoretical and practical competencies in the fast-developing world of sedation and pain management.

International students without GDC registration are welcome to undertake the theoretical elements of the course as a CPD course.

Conscious sedation is growing rapidly as a safe and commercially viable solution to dental anxiety in all patient groups, and complex behavioural challenges in children and young people. Safe practice requires an experienced clinician, usually a doctor or dentist, with honed knowledge and skills supporting a patient-focused approach.

Our Postgraduate Certificate refreshes and deepens the basic sciences underpinning safe sedation practice before dissecting the patient journey from referral to recovery. Key themes are safety, quality, and self-reflection as we look to provide patient-focused procedural sedation as an effective and evolving service in the context of wider dental practice.

Delivery is via classroom lectures on campus at Bloomsbury, live online sessions via videoconferencing, online learning materials, clinical skills seminars, and a clinical placement administering sedation under direct supervision. High-fidelity simulation at the UCLH Education Centre develops situational awareness and builds confidence managing challenging situations.

Teaching takes place in two one-week blocks during October and April each year. Between these blocks, students complete their clinical placement at our affiliated practice, along with a quality improvement project in their own practice. A small programme of live online sessions is also provided to support focus and engagement.

Students rate our course very highly. Graduates apply their newly-acquired sedation skills and techniques in their own clinical practices regularly and with a high degree of satisfaction. We also offer an annual Advanced Study Club meeting to reconvene and discuss current issues and developments in this growing and worthwhile field.

Practical training is provided in clinics in and around London. During the clinical attachments, students will receive training in pre-sedation evaluation, administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen and intravenous sedation under the guidance of the mentors, and associated experienced personnel. Students will be able to observe the criteria set for discharge of patients after sedation and will be encouraged to utilise their new skills on returning to their own clinics; the mentors will remain available to the students for advice and guidance during this period.
