Eastman Clinical Investigation Centre (ECIC)

Dental chair
A Clinical Research Facility fully dedicated to clinical and translational research in the field of Oral and Dental Diseases. ECIC is a partnership between the Institute University College London (UCL) and University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust, Eastman Dental Hospital. Further support is provided by the NIHR UCLH Biomedical Research Centre and the NIHR North Thames Clinical Research Network.

The mission of the ECIC is to support and facilitate clinical and translational research with the aim of improving the care of patients with Oral and Dental Disease through new diagnostics and therapeutics. The research activities of ECIC focus on the full spectrum of disorders of the head and neck region including disease of the oral mucosa, dentition, jawbones, salivary glands, cranial nerves, masticatory muscles and adjacent structures and organs.

Why choose the ECIC?

The ECIC is the only clinical research facility in UK fully dedicated to to clinical and translational research in the field of Oral and Dental Diseases. The ECIC has a unique track record of commercial and investigator-led clinical studies with a total of more than 2000 participants recruited in the last few years. Examples include clinical trials of medical devices for the treatment of salivary gland disease, novel diagnostics for oral cancer and other oral and dental disease, and clinical studies of systemic inflammation associated with oral disease and surgical procedures.

Services

The ECIC provides the infrastructure and experienced research delivery staff to undertake experimental medicine and complex clinical studies and ensure that clinical trials are delivered on time and target and in full compliance with the principles of Good Research Practice and NHS clinical governance.

Structure

The ECIC is currently located within UCL premises in the basement of the Levy Wing of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and Hospital. The ECIC includes:

  • four clinical rooms for patient assessment and treatment equipped with dental chairs;
  • two additional rooms for patient assessment and treatment;
  • a quite interview/meeting room dedicated to qualitative research (development of Quality of Life questionnaires and focus groups);
  • a reception;
  • a Biobank with three -80°C freezers.
