Oral Medicine and Special Care Dentistry

Introduction

Established in 1993, the unit undertakes education and research allied to Oral Medicine and Special Care Dentistry and — together with the staff of ULCHT Eastman Dental Hospital — provides clinical care of patients with complex relevant disease.

The staff of the unit have an international reputation as reflected in research outputs and leadership of specialist organisations and grant awards. The unit has strong international educational and research alliances with similar units around the globe.

Graduates from the unit have often gone on to senior positions in Oral Medicine and/or Special Care Dentistry both within the UK and globally.

World Class Education

The unit has the longest established UK postgraduate programme in Oral Medicine and was the first to offer postgraduate teaching at different levels in Special Care Dentistry. It has a strong track record in the provision of research and education for PhD studies.

Postgraduates have access to the excellent teaching and research facilities of the Institute and UCL.

Research Interests

● The pharmacogenetics of bisphosphonate related osseochemonecrosis (BRONJ)
● Novel therapies for Sjogren’s syndrome and radiotherapy-associated salivary gland dysfunction
● The microbial and immunological aspects of granulomatous disease of the mouth
● Outcomes of therapy of oral mucosal disease
● Impact of oral surgery upon ischaemic heart disease
