Aims and objectives
In the context of conscious sedation:
- To develop advanced theoretical competencies in medical/dental practitioners in the fast developing area of advanced conscious sedation techniques
- To equip medical/dental practitioners with the knowledge to provide safe and effective sedation and pain control for patients undergoing dental/medical procedures when combinations of drugs are used.
- To equip medical/dental practitioners with a better understanding of changes in cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal and liver physiology when combinations of drugs are used
- To equip medical/dental practitioners with the knowledge of how drugs work when used in combination, and to update their knowledge on newer sedative and analgesic drugs
- To equip students with a thorough understanding of the physiology of pain, and how drugs can be used at different sites along the pain pathways for pain relief
- To comply with the 2007 conscious sedation guidelines in the UK by the Standard Dental Advisory committee that practitioners using advanced conscious sedation techniques must be trained, and their should be a regular update in knowledge and skills
- To support recommendations regarding theoretical training in sedation as suggested in the 2011 NICE guidelines published in the UK
