Hands-on course in dental microscopy

Course Leads: Greg Finn and Tony Druttman

UCL Eastman CPD, in association with Zeiss Microscopes and NuView, are pleased to offer an innovative course in Dental Microscopy. Two separate courses are offered:

Friday 6th December 2013 The Dental Operating Microscope in Restorative Dentistry - Seeing Beyond Loupes – Lead by Greg Finn

Saturday 7th December 2013 The Dental Operating Microscope in Endodontics – Lead by Tony Druttman

Both courses will be centred around practical use of a microscope. We aim to help dental professionals smoothly incorporate microscopy into the clinical setting, demonstrating immediate improvements to the quality of dental care, patient communication and team-working, whilst decreasing back and eye strain. Through a series of seminars and hands-on sessions, each course will be delivered by experienced dental specialists in prosthodontics and endodontics who have been using microscopy for many years.

On the Restorative Day, you will use the microscope to:

  • Carry out occlusal examinations of one another
  • Learn how to examine all areas of the mouth
  • Cut cavities using dental simulators
  • Set up the operating microscope for optimum performance
  • Improve operator ergonomics to decrease fatigue
  • Use shadowless lighting to aid diagnosis and treatment
  • Use direct and indirect vision
  • Improve patient communication and build patient trust
  • Enhance patient care and improve manual dexterity
  • Create effective teamwork and enhance assistant interest and involvement
  • Refine clinical techniques under the guidance of experienced specialists

On the Endodontics Day, you will use the microscope to:

  • Learn how to examine all areas of the mouth
  • Cut access cavities and prepare canals using suitable extracted teeth provided by participants. Participants will be required to bring rotary root-canal instruments of their preference, which will be used unless the same are available at the Eastman.
  • Learn documentation and re-treatment tips using the microscope
  • Set up the operating microscope for optimum performance
  • Improve operator ergonomics to decrease fatigue
  • Use shadowless lighting to aid diagnosis and treatment
  • Use direct and indirect vision
  • Improve patient communication and build patient trust
  • Enhance patient care and improve manual dexterity
  • Create effective teamwork and enhance assistant interest and involvement
  • Refine clinical techniques under the guidance of experienced specialists
  • Practical training will also take place in a clinical setting. Participants will also be able to carry out clinical procedures in a skills laboratory such as cavity preparation, crown preparation and endodontic canal location.
