EFFORT grant funds microbiology project

11 April 2014

The Eastman Foundation for Oral Research and Training (EFFORT) has recently funded a project run by Dr Andrew Smith and Dr Adam Roberts, both Senior Lecturers in Microbial Diseases.

The aim of this EFFORT funded project is to understand the role of bacteria in oral disease. In order to do this it is first important to fully define the human microflora of the healthy oral cavity.

Smith and Roberts are therefore going to study the oral microbiota of two large families with over 200 members in each. These individuals will be analysed to determine how the oral microbiota is influenced by relatedness, gender, age, co-habitation, geography and human genetics.

These two families will comprise the largest ever study using this approach and will be an extremely valuable research resource for oral and systemic health.
