Institute awarded research grants to study the impact of oral health on elite sport performance

Following on from research at the London 2012 Olympic Games, UCL Eastman Dental Institute has been awarded two grants to support a three-year PhD programme.

One of the grants comes from GlaxoSmithKline the other is a prestigious UCL Impact PhD Studentship.

The research will investigate the oral health of elite athletes, the determinants of oral health and impact of oral health on performance. Commenting on the research, Dr Richard Budgett, International Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Director and Olympic Gold Medallist Rower said, "Congratulations! This is impressive and in essence a great legacy from the Games."

The research is led by Professor Ian Needleman and Dr Paul Ashley in collaboration with the UCL Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health.
