Dr Anne Young of UCL Eastman Dental Institute's department of Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering was Highly Commended at this year's WISE Awards, held at the Science Museum on 14 November.

WISE is a national organisation that aims to promote female talent in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  Its mission is to improve the gender balance in the UK's STEM workforce, with the aim of increasing the presence of female employees from just 13% to over 30% by 2020.

Its annual awards ceremony is held to recognise and celebrate the talent and contribution of individual women in STEM fields.

HRH The Princess Royal presents Dr Anne Young with her award

Dr Young was awarded a special commendation for her work on inventions that have the potential to revolutionise dental care and treatment of osteoporotic fractures.

The materials being developed by the research group of Dr Young and her co-workers have greater biocompatibility, are simpler and easier to place and have improved physical properties in comparison to current dental composites or bone cements.

Dr. Young was presented with her WISE Enterprise and Innovation Award certificate by HRH The Princess Royal during a gala dinner held at the Science Museum.
