Assessment and Progression

Courses are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. Assessment is by a combination of written examinations, practical examinations, coursework, independent project reports and oral examination. With very few exceptions, examinations are taken in the Summer Term.

Individual taught modules normally carry a value of 0.5 credits. A total of 12 credits must be acquired to complete a three-year (BSc) programme and 16 credits must be acquired to complete a four-year (MSci) programme. The normal expectation is that students will acquire 4 credits each year. To progress on to the Second Year, a First Year student must gain a minimum of 3.5 credits. The minimum requirement for progression from Second Year to Third Year is 7 credits. The Third Year culminates in graduation with BSc, or progression to MSci. In order to progress to the Fourth Year of an MSci, students must have gained 11 credits and achieved a mean mark of at least 55% for their Third Year of study.
