Comments and suggestions

We would welcome your comments on existing activities, or offers to share new activities with other schools. Please contact Dr. Wendy Kirk at Department of Earth Sciences, University College London, WC1E 6BT.

This resource has been put together by Wendy Kirk, Frances Cooper and Jayne Dunn, with support from the staff at the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium, particularly Xa Naylor.

How to use this resource

This resource provides field sites and background information for use within areas of the curriculum concerned with different rock types and how they weather. The exercises have been designed to cater for GCSE science and geography, although they may be adapted for different levels. Two different locations have been chosen for the exercises to allow for times when one of the sites might be in use for normal City of London business.

The Rock Box

The Rock Box is an object-based teaching resource, which can be used by any school or organisation, free of charge. It contains sets of minerals, rocks and fossils, from UCL's Geology Collections, which are suitable for teaching up to 30 people at a time (in 5 groups of 6).

The accompanying Rock Manual provides a 'beginners guide to geology' and also contains instructions for many hands-on activities. The activities can easily be linked to the science curriculum at Key Stage 3, or modified to suit Key Stage 2.

This loans box is available for collection from UCL's Museums & Collections (just off Gower St); alternatively, a geology teacher is available to give sessions with the Rock Box to any school in or around London. For further information, please contact Sophy Crosby, telephone 07753 570779.
