Ensure your place and get your free tickets here.

This will be a fantastic evening for poetry newbies and hardcore literati alike, with exciting, mind-boggling modern poetry, presented in both Dutch and English.

Surrender to the sounds and rhythm of another language, and discover why Ester's poetry has recently won the highly esteemed Dutch VSB Poetry Prize that one can easily call the 'Orange prize of Dutch poetry’.

For this event brand-new translations were commissioned as part of the Contemporary European Poets series, partly funded by the AHRC. Two of our research students coordinated the event: Gail Zuckerwise is the responsible Events Manager, and Stefanie van Gemert, translated Ester's poems, under mentorship of prof. Jane Fenoulhet.

Ester Naomi Perquin’s debut volume, Servetten halfstok, was published in 2007. It was followed in 2009 by the collection Namens de ander. In 2011 she was appointed the City Poet of Rotterdam. She has received a number of prizes for her work, among which the Liegend Konijn prize, the Anna Blaman prize, the Lucy B. and C.W. van der Hoogt prize and the J.C. Bloem prize. Her latest volume, Celinspecties (Cell inspections), was published in early 2012 and was awarded the VSB Poetry Prize for the best volume of 2013.

In partnership with The School of European Languages, Culture and Society at UCL, the Contemporary European Poets series brings to London celebrated poets from Hungary, Holland, France, Germany, the Faroe Islands and Italy, for showcase events at Europe House. Events will include live readings by the poets, with all poems read both in the original language and in brand new specially commissioned English translations.
