Director of the Fryske Akademy (KNAW) and Honorary Professor of Dutch Language and Literature
Since 1 June 2006 director of the Fryske Akademy (KNAW) in Leeuwarden (Frisian Academy, Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences). Writes on Dutch language and linguistics, cultural policy and creolization.
He is the author of Leading Conceptions in Linguistic Theory (1985), and is a member of the advisory board of the Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst (1998, the Standard Grammar of Modern Dutch) and the editorial boards of Dutch Crossing : Journal for Low Countres Studies and The Low Countries: Arts and Society in Flanders and The Netherlands. A Yearbook. He also publishes regularly on Dutch colonial and postcolonial literature, modern literature of the East Indies (present-day Indonesia).
