CSF Examination

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination (lumbar puncture) can provide invaluable information about the underlying cause of an individual patient's dementia, and is recommended in all patients with young onset dementia.

The CSF laboratory at Queen Square is a national referral centre, offering measurement of neurodegeneration markers including amyloid beta (1-42) and tau.

Through collaborations with the CSF laboratory, other laboratories within UCL, and colleagues at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, we have established a new research programme to develop and validate novel CSF measures of neurodegenerative disease for diagnosis and disease tracking.
