Patrick Wakely, AA Dip (London) RIBA
Professor of Urban Development
Emeritus Professor of Urban Development (retired 2005)
Professor Wakely has 40 years of experience of teaching, research and
consultancy in housing, urban development planning and management, institutional
development and capacity building, on which he has worked in over 20 countries.
He has held full-time academic appointments in Asia, Africa, Latin America
and the United Kingdom and has undertaken applied research and consultancy
for many international agencies including UNDP, UN-Habitat, the World
Bank and Asian Development Bank, DFID and other bilateral agencies.

Recent Research and Consultancy Projects
• Advisor to the Sri Lanka Minster for Urban Development and Water
Supply on the development of a National Human Settlements Reconstruction
Policy, with particular emphasis on informal settlements following the
December 2004 tsunami. (UN-Habitat)
• Team Leader for Southern Sudan Urban Study to assess the absorptive
capacity of urban areas following the signing of the Peace Agreement.
Policy recommendations for land legislation, planning and management procedures,
infrastructure development and capacity building. (UNDP, 2005)
• Advisor, Ibis Southern Africa Urban Programme and the SA Coalition
of the Urban Poor (DANIDA, 2004)
• Evaluation of the UN Urban Management Programme (UMP) and recommendations
for its extension as the Urban Millennium Partnership to promote and build
capacity for localising the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in urban
areas. (UNDP/UN-Habitat, 2003)
• Study of Integrated Urban Social Service Provision for the Urban
Poor in Cambodia -Phnom Penh and three provincial towns (ADB, 2003)
