Postgraduate Teaching Assistant: MSc DAP


Development planner specialising in squatter settlement upgrading policies and participatory approaches to development. He has produced the documentary Open Wound, which explores the impacts of a World Bank-funded squatter upgrading project in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. Areas of expertise include human development, housing, urban development, participation and the Capability Approach. He is also the coordinator of the thematic group on participatory methods for the Human Development and Capability Association. Alex is visiting lecturer on the Masters programmes in Development and Emergency Practices at CENDEP, Oxford Brookes University, and Human Development and Food Security at Roma Tre University.

Nov 08 – Jan 09: Consultant - Research for the UNDP Brazil using participatory methods for the prioritization of needs in the 10 municipalities in Brazil with lowest Human Development Indexes.

May – Oct 08: Project Manager and Facilitator - Workshop on Participatory Methods and the Capability Approach. Three-months project, involving training on participatory methods and capability approach for researchers and consultants and an evaluation of the work of an NGO Project Why working with children in informal settlements in New Delhi, India. Funded by Human Development and Capability Association and UCL.

Five day training programme with 30 participants from 13 Commonwealth Countries. University of Legon, Ghana. Funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

June – Sept 07: Research Consultant – University of Florence: Coordinating a research on social networks and elaborating a micro-credit project in the municipality of Vitoria do Mearim, in the state of Maranhão, Northeast of Brazil.
