Dental Public Health Group
Dental problems are widespread,
although their causes are known and effective methods of prevention
are available. The DPH Group are interested in the theory, implementation
and evaluation of oral health strategies which adddress the social
determinants of oral health. Conventional preventive approaches
have failed
to tackle oral health inequalities. New approaches which aim
to create a supportive environment for oral health need to be
developed and evaluated.
areas of research include:
the impact of the mouth on
daily living
-
development
of quality of life socio-dental indicators
-
socio-economic factors in
oral health
-
dental personnel
planning.
The DPH Group, as part of the Department
of Epidemiology and Public Health and the International Institute
of Society and Health is able to draw on the expertise of researchers
graduating in the fields of biology, economics, medicine, nursing,
psychology, statistics and sociology. Strong relationships have
also been forged with key bodies outside UCL and service providers
at local, national and international levels including; The World
Health Organisation, The UK Department of Health, The British
Dental Association, The Faculty of General Dental Practitioners
and The Dental Practice Board.
