Dyslexia Support

The UCL Dyslexia Centre provides both an assessment service and specialist study skills tuition. Students who have reason to believe they need an assessment should, in the first instance, contact the Disability Centre where staff will oversee the screening procedure and liaise with the Dyslexia Centre to make appointments as appropriate.

Services provided by the Dyslexia Assessment and Support Centre

Diagnosis and Assessment

If you are dyslexic and have been assessed since you were sixteen you need to send a copy of your report to the Disability Centre.  You will also need to make an appointment for a short assessment at the Dyslexia Centre to establish your support needs; including special examination arrangements.  Please note that all first year students with dyslexia, however recently assessed, need to make an appointment to see one of the Dyslexia Centre Assessors.

If you have been assessed before, but before you were sixteen, you will need a "top-up" assessment if you wish to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance.  Contact the Dyslexia Centre for an appointment.

If you have never been assessed before but you or your tutors think you show signs of dyslexia, you should contact the Disability Centre for screening.  In some cases it is clear from the information elicted during screening that an assessment is not indicated.  When a full assessment is deemed appropriate an appointment will be made for you with one of the Centre Assessors.  You will receive a detailed, confidential report and copies of a short summary of your assessment results to give to relevant tutors so that appropriate support can be put in place.

Tuition in study skills

Students with dyslexia often have difficulty with particular study skills, such as note-taking, planning and structuring written assignments, revision and exam techniques.  Specialist individual tuition, usually funded through the Disabled Students' Allowance, is offered to students who feel they would benefit from this support.  Appointments should be made through the Disability Centre.

Special examination arrangements

The assessment from the Dyslexia Centre provides essential evidence for the awarding of any special examiniation arrangements such as extra time.  If you have a full or supplementary assessment at the Dyslexia Centre that recommends special arrangements, this will be forwarded automatically to the Examinations Section.

Disabled Students' Allowances

Students who have been diagnosed as having dyslexia may wish to apply to their Local Education Authority, NHS or research funding body for DSA
