INSTG048 Publishing Systems: Product Design and Delivery

This module aims to provide students with a critical appreciation of the full range of essential `back office’ publishing functions. By the end of the course, students will have a good appreciation of the range of employment opportunities within publishing houses; how internal publishing processes work and how they are changing; and how to manage the outsourcing of back office functions.

Topics include: the production process in its entirety, including hosting and distribution; editorial and production management; the impact of electronic publishing on back office functions; copyediting; customer service, distribution and logistics, the structure of the book trade.

Assessment: Assessment by coursework only
Compulsory for: MA in Publishing
Optional for: This module will be available for short course students
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this module, although some familiarity with general publishing functions is assumed
