UCL Directory Service: Explanation of the UPI field
The UCL Personal Identifier (UPI) is a computerised index assigning a
unique code to everyone who is or has ever been a bona-fide member of the
College. By being unique it allows differentiation between J.Bloggs, an
undergraduate in the (fictitious) Department of Speech and Drama, from
Professor. J.M. Bloggs, the head of the (fictitious) Department of Nautical
Studies. It is used for many behind the scenes activities, such as
generating departmental mailing lists. In the directory listing if a person
with the same initials and surname appears in two departments with same
UPI, then this is probably person with a joint appointment or more than one
role. If the same initials and surnames appear in two or more departments
with different UPIs then these are different people.
