UCL Directory Service: Explanation and Examples of use

It is possible to search the directory by name, department, phone number, internal phone number or email address, or any combination of these categories. The search string will be matched against complete words (not parts of words, but see later). If more than one search string is entered in any particular category, the search is performed for any entry containing all the specified strings (in any order) and is case-insensitive. For example, searching for the name 'smith' in the department 'information' will list all the Smith's in Information Systems and also in the School of Library, Archive and Information Studies.

When accessing this directory from outside UCL (or from a machine in UCL that is not a known host), the number of entries returned is restricted to the first 10. Entries are sorted alphabetically.

Is is possible to use wildcard characters when the precise spelling of the name is not known. The character * will match one or more unknown characters, and the character ? will match any single character. For example, searching for ba*er will match any name starting with 'Ba' and ending in 'er', for example, Baker, Barker, Banister, etc. Searching for All?n will match Allan and Allen. NOTE: wildcards cannot be used at the start of a word.
